Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer bows out of CCIW Tournament with a 3-0 loss at Carthage

Kenosha, Wis. - Scoring opportunities were plentiful for the Thunder men's soccer team on Wednesday night, but none found the back of the net as Wheaton was eliminated from the CCIW Tournament with a 3-0 loss at Carthage. The loss brings Wheaton to 10-7-1 overall while the Red Men avenged last week's 1-0 double overtime loss to the Thunder to improve to 11-8-1.

Unlike last week's matchup, Wheaton's scoring chances came early and often as the Thunder finished the match with a 24-12 shot advantage. Niko Mavrogiannis was up to the task for the Red Men, recording his seventh shutout behind an eight-save performance. Drew Cammarano made four saves and allowed three goals for the Thunder.

Mavrogiannis was called into action early in the match, making two saves in the 11th minute on a rush from the Thunder. Carthage was able to sustain the initial push from the Thunder and landed the first blow in the 22nd minute when Adrian Herrera scored his sixth goal of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Carthage defense withstood another flurry of shots in the 39th minute and responded by landing a second goal minutes before the halftime break when Ivan Esquivel scored in the 42nd minute to make it 2-0.

Wheaton turned up the heat on its attack in the second half, outshooting the Red Men 15-3, but could not find the net. Mavrogiannis equaled his first half performance, recording another four saves in the second half to preserve the clean sheet.

With the Thunder pushing forward, Carthage countered in the 63rd minute to take a 3-0 lead on a goal by Jorge Triana.
