The Wheaton volleyball team falls to Loras, 3-0

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton volleyball team (10-15) hosted Loras College on Wednesday night in King Arena for a non-conference match against the Duhawks. Loras (15-8) topped the Thunder 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 26-24) in the matchup. Prior to tonight's match, Wheaton honored its three seniors: Jess Bosse, Amanda Smith and Kelly Thornton for "Senior Night".

Audrey Gerze led the Thunder with 11 kills. She had just two errors on 21 swings tonight with a .429 attack percentage. Wheaton's Ellie Brown had 10 kills, with two errors on 19 attempts for a .421 attack percentage. Madeline Moore had seven kills and Colleen Smith added five kills.

Kelly Thornton led the Thunder with 19 assists and Alecia Funk had 12 assists. Thornton had a team-high 16 digs with 15 digs for Jess Bosse.

Kayla Kinney led Loras with 13 kills and Paige Griffith led the Duhawks with 31 assists. Krystal Tranel led the guests with 13 digs.

Loras won the first set 26-24. Wheaton led 7-4 early in the set, however, the Duhawks responded to take a 10-8 lead. A 5-1 run for the Thunder gave Wheaton a 14-11 lead. Loras countered with seven of the next nine points to take an 18-16 lead. Wheaton fought back to tie the match at 24-24, however, Loras scored the final two points for the 26-24 win. Moore led the Thunder with four kills in the opening set and Thornton added five assists and five digs.

Loras was a 25-21 victor in the second set. Wheaton led 8-4 early in the second set with seven of the next nine points as the Duhawks took an 11-10 lead. Loras broke a 13-13 tie with three-consecutive points to take a 16-13 lead and the Duhawks never trailed in the set after that. Gerze had a team-high five kills in the set and Ellie Brown added four. Thornton distributed six assists and she had a team-high seven digs.

Loras was a 26-24 victor in the decisive third set. Wheaton led 10-7 early in the set, however, Loras rallied to tie the set at 13-13. From that point the Duhawks scored four-consecutive points to take a 17-13 lead. Wheaton battled back with a 6-1 run to take a 19-18 lead. Gerze had a kill and service ace in the key sequence. The two teams battled back-and-forth with ties at 21-21, 22-22 and 24-24. A kill by Loras' Kinney gave the Duhawks a 25-24 lead and a
