Chicago, Ill. - Three days after putting the handing the first blemish of the season to #1-ranked WashU with a 2-2 tie, the Thunder women's soccer team found itself in familiar territory. With the release of the new United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, University of Chicago ascended to the new top spot in the rankings just hours before facing the Thunder at Stagg Field in Chicago. Similar to Saturday's matchup with the Bears, Wheaton found itself playing from behind, but this time could not find the late equalizer, falling to the nation's top-ranked team 2-1. UChicago improves to 9-0 on the season while Wheaton falls to 3-4-2.
The Maroons dominated possession, outshooting the Thunder 20-6 including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal and corner kick opportunities. Katie Donovan took the win in goal for the Maroons, allowing one goal in 45 minutes of work. Miranda Malone did not allow a goal in her 45 minutes. Neither keeper registered a save.
Kathryn McGregor allowed two goals but made seven saves for Wheaton.
The host Maroons wasted no time in staking themselves to an early lead. Madori Spiker's shot from in front of the net put the Maroons on the board just 2:01 into the match off an assist from Mia Calamari. McGregor's three first half saves would keep the score at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half.
Wheaton found its equalizer early in the second half when
Isabelle Oliver, the newly minted CCIW Offensive Player of the Week, blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the net off a Maroon turnover to tie things at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
Just over seven minutes later, the Maroons would find the decisive goal of the match when Jenna McKinney's centering pass found Kelsey Moore for an open shot at the 59:15 to make it 2-1. Chicago would continue to control the possession through the remainder of the match, limiting Wheaton's chances and holding on the victory.
Wheaton will return to Joe Bean Stadium on Saturday night when the Thunder open CCIW action against North Park at 4:30 pm.
