Women's soccer shuts out North Park 7-0 in the CCIW opener for the Thunder

The Wheaton women's soccer team opened conference play on Saturday night with a convincing 7-0 victory against North Park (6-4-1, 0-2-1 CCIW) at Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton improves to 4-4-2 on the season and is now 1-0-0 in CCIW play.

27991Thunder freshman Isabelle Oliver (PICTURED LEFT) scored twice in the first half to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead at the halftime intermission. Oliver scored in the 11th minute off a Morgan Whitman assist and she blasted a goal into the net from the top of the box in the 43rd minute to account for the 2-0 halftime lead.

Whitman scored less than one minute into the second half when she tallied a goal in the 46th minute off an Anne Jekel assist. Whitman headed the ball into the net in the 54th minute off an Anna Saunders assist. Wheaton was awarded a penalty kick in the 66th minute and Hannah Cockrum converted the penalty kick to extend Wheaton's lead to 5-0. Lauren Wilkes scored her first collegiate goal in the 78th minute on an Emma Fisler cross. In the 82nd minute, Saunders' corner kick found Sammy Nishiyama who tallied her first goal of the year to account for the 7-0 final score.

Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 42-4 in the match, including a 21-1 edge in shots on goal. The Thunder earned five corner kicks in the match.

Thunder starting goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor played 45 minutes in the match. Her freshman teammate, Madison Lee, made one save with no goals allowed. North Park goalkeeper Sydney Martinez made 14 saves and allowed seven goals.

The Thunder host Carthage on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a CCIW matchup.
