Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team shut out Calvin College 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Bean Stadium. The Thunder handed Calvin (7-2-0) just its second loss of the season as Wheaton improves to 3-3-1 on the year.
Wheaton reached the scoreboard for the first time on a
Bailey Wolf goal in the 15th minute. Wolf scored from in front of the far post on goal that landed in the net at the near post thanks to a
Sarah Tomich assist.
Isabelle Oliver increased Wheaton's lead to 2-0 with her first career goal in the 29th minute. Her goal from the six-yard box was assisted by
Morgan Whitman.
Madison Peebles tallied the third goal of the night as she increased the hosts' lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute.
Wheaton led the Knights 3-0 at halftime. The Thunder out-shot Calvin 11-1 in the opening half.
Hannah Cockrum's (PICTURED LEFT) first goal of the year extended the hosts' lead to 4-0 in the 52nd minute. Cockrum's goal was assisted by
Anna Saunders and
Sarah Gencarella. Oliver netted her second goal of the match as she booted a loose ball into the back of the net in the 89th minute. The Thunder held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the second half.
Wheaton out-shot the Knights 16-3 in the match, including an 8-0 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded 11 corner kicks in the match and Calvin had none. Thunder starting goalkeeper
Kathryn McGregor played 45 minutes in the net and freshman
Madison Lee played the final 45 minutes in goal. Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer made three saves and allowed five goals.
Wheaton travels to Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. matchup with the Bears.
