Men's soccer falls 1-0 to top-ranked University of Chicago

Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's soccer team saw its modest two-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday night at the hands of of the University of Chicago Maroons. The top-ranked Maroons scored the game's only goal late in the first half to claim the 1-0 goal and improve to 7-0 on the season. The loss drops Wheaton to 3-4 on the campaign. Wheaton will conclude its four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when the Thunder will host 18th-ranked WashU at 4 pm.

The high-flying Maroons entered play averaging over 21 shots per game but held just a 13-12 advantage in shots. Hasten Middlecome made three saves and allowed one goal for the Thunder. Chicago's Hill Bonin made four saves for the Maroons.

Wheaton's best first half opportunity came in the 27th minute when Max Carey found some space at the top of the box and blasted a left-footed shot that sailed just high of the crossbar. Five minutes later, Chicago found the net on an impressive cross from Josh Scofield that found the diving head of Max Lopez to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead at the 31:54 mark.

Hasten Middlecome kept the score at 1-0 with a sprawling save in the 48th minute on Carter Romero's header. Wheaton's best chance to equalize came in the 64th minute when Jacob Kapitaniuk rattled the crossbar with a strong shot attempt. Biddlecome answered the bell twice in the final ten minutes but Wheaton could not find the net on the other end to fall 1-0.
