Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton men's soccer team hosted No. 18 ranked WashU on Saturday night at Joe Bean Stadium The two teams battled back-and-forth all night playing a scoreless tie in the 90 minutes of regulation time under warm conditions. WashU (5-0-1) won the game with a goal at the 102-minute mark to earn the win. Wheaton (3-5-2) travels to Lake Forest September 27 for a non-conference match with the Foresters.
Wheaton tallied three shots on goal in the first half, including two by
Sean Dunlop (PICTURED ABOVE). WashU goalkeeper Colin McCune made saves on all three shots to preserve the 0-0 tie at the halftime intermission. Wheaton out-shot the Bears 8-3 in the opening half.
Wheaton had a 6-4 advantage in shots in the second half. Each team had a shot on goal in the second half.
Drew Shay's shot in the 95
th minute was stopped b McCune to keep the scoreless draw intact in the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, Shay headed the ball towards the goal in the 102
nd minute, but it was saved by McCune. The Bears were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box about 50-seconds later and Makio Yamamoto's free kick reached the head of Will Sproule who headed the ball into the net for the game-winning goal.
Thunder goalkeeper
Hasten Biddlecome made one save and allowed one goal in his 102 minutes of work in the Thunder net. McCune made six saves and recorded the shutout for the Bears. Wheaton owned a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded seven corner kicks in the match and WashU attempted five corner kicks.
