The Thunder softball team tops John Carroll in Wednesday's doubleheader

The Thunder softball team split a pair of games on Wednesday in the fourth day of action at the NTC Tournament. Wheaton (2-6) opened the day with a 6-1 victory against John Carroll University. Emmanuel College rallied to top the Thunder 5-2 in Wheaton's second game of the day.

Wheaton topped John Carroll in the opener as the Thunder scored six runs, on nine hits, with two errors and John Carroll scored one run, on three hits with two errors. Kendall Kehres (2-2) earned her second win of the trip. Kehres held the Blue Streaks to just one run, on three hits, with three strikeouts. Freshman Sage Miller was 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBI. Megan Neuhaus and Kelly Thornton each went 2-for-4.

The Thunder gained an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hannah Clark led off the game with a triple and scored on the next at bat as Neuhaus brought her home with a RBI-single. The Thunder lead increased to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single for Miller. Morgan Ryan hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to extend the Thunder lead to 6-0. The Blue Streaks scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the 6-1 final score.

Emmanuel scored five runs, on nine hits with one error and Wheaton tallied two runs, with eight hits and three errors. Wheaton's eight hits were distributed across eight players. Maddy Bonetto hit a two-run homer for the Thunder. Clark stole a pair of bases for the Thunder. Jaclyn McLean worked five innings in the circle. She allowed two unearned runs on six hits. Kehres pitched two innings of relief, allowing three runs, including one earned run on three hits.

Wheaton gained a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Bonetto's two-run home run. Emmanuel rallied with five runs in the top of the sixth inning to gain the lead and secure the 5-2 victory.

The Thunder will close out the 10-game trip on Thursday. Wheaton faces Ohio Northern at 3:30 p.m. (EST) and Nebraska Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. (EST)
