Leesburg, Fla. – The Wheaton Thunder softball team played two games on the third day of its 10-game trip to Central Florida on Tuesday. Wheaton opened the day with a 5-3 loss to Monmouth (Ill.) and dropped a 5-2 decision against Wittenberg University in the second game of the day.
In the day's first game, Monmouth scored five runs, with four hits and six errors. Wheaton tallied three runs, with six hits and two errors.
Kendall Kehres (1-2) took the loss in seven innings. Six different players collected Wheaton's six hits in the game, all singles.
In the second game of the day, Wittenberg registered five runs, on seven hits with two errors. Wheaton scored two runs, on three hits with no errors.
Hannah Clark was 2-of-3 at the plate, with a run scored. Clark led off the game with a triple.
Jaclyn McLean (0-3) took the loss in four innings as she scattered five hits and allowed two runs.
Kelly Thornton pitched two innings of relief.
Wittenberg scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Morgan Ryan drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second inning and later scored to tie the game at 1-1. Clark hit a one-out single and scored a go-ahead run in the top of the second inning to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
The Tigers tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wittenberg added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead and the Tigers added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the 5-2 final score.
The trip continues tomorrow with a game against John Carroll at 8:00 a.m. (EST) and matchup with Emmanuel 10:30 a.m. (EST).
