Clermont, Fla. – The Thunder softball team split a pair of games on Saturday to open its Spring Break trip at the NTC Spring Games. The Thunder opened the trip on Saturday morning with a come-from-behind win against University of Northwestern (Minn.). On Saturday afternoon the Thunder lost a 4-2 matchup with University of Mount Union.
In the 3-2 victory against Northwestern, Wheaton scored three runs, on six hits with one error. Northwestern plated two runs, on four hits, with two errors.
Hannah Clark (PICTURED ABOVE) had two hits for the Thunder.
Wheaton broke a scoreless tie with one run in the bottom of the second inning.
Morgan Ryan drew a one-out walk and scored on the next at-bat on an error by the Eagles. Northwestern scored one run in the top of the fifth inning and added another in the top of the sixth inning to gain a 2-1 lead.
Wheaton rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead on the Eagles. An RBI-double by Ryan was followed by a RBI-triple for
Maddy Bonetto that brought Ryan home and gave Wheaton the 3-2 lead.
In Saturday's nightcap, Mount Union scored four runs, on 10 hits with no errors. Wheaton registered two runs, with five hits and the Thunder committed no errors.
Mount Union took a 1-0 lead with a Purple Raiders' run in the bottom of the first inning. The Thunder gained a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a two-run home run by Bonetto. The Raiders rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead with a 4-2 edge over the Thunder.
Jaclyn McLean took the loss (0-1) for the Thunder. In six innings, she allowed four earned runs, on 10 hits with one walk.
The Thunder return to action on Monday morning with a pair of games in Clermont, Florida. Wheaton faces Nebraska Wesleyan at 8:00 a.m. (EST) followed by a matchup with Penn State-Behrend at 10:30 a.m. (EST).
