Women's basketball falls to No. 20 Scranton 67-53 in the Music City Classic

The Wheaton Thunder women's basketball team returned to action on Friday evening as the Thunder faced No. 20-ranked University of Scranton in the Music City Classic. Scranton utilized a strong second half to top the Thunder 67-53. Wheaton will close out its participation in the tournament on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. with a matchup against Marywood (Pa.).

Kelly Lawson led the Thunder tonight against Scranton with a game-high 25 points. Lawson made six three-point field goals for Wheaton.
Jordan Myroth and Jill Berg each scored six points for Wheaton. Hannah Frazier two steals. Devin Kyler scored four points and she added 10 rebounds with four assists. Maggie Dansdill grabbed eight rebounds with three assists and two steals.

Wheaton shot 31.1% (19-of-61) from the field, including 30.8% (8-for-26) from three-point range. Scranton registered a 60% (30-of-50) field goal percentage, including 62.5% (5-of-8) behind the three-point arc.  The Thunder shot 53.8% (7-of13) at the free throw line and Scranton had a 40% (2-of-5) effort at the charity stripe. The Lady Royals out-rebounded Wheaton 38-29, however, the Thunder had an 11-4 edge on the offensive glass.

Wheaton led 15-14 at the conclusion of the first quarter. A Jennifer Berg three-pointer increased Wheaton's lead to 18-14 with 9:00 left in the second quarter. The Lady Royals responded with five-consecutive points to take a 19-18 lead with 7:00 remaining in the second quarter. Scranton extended its third-quarter lead to as much as seven points with a 27-20 advantage with 1:33 left in the quarter. Layups by Kyler and Frazier in the final 1:35 of the first half allowed Wheaton to trim the Lady Royals' halftime lead to 27-24.

Scranton led the Thunder 31-30 with 6:55 left in the third quarter when the Lady Royals used a 15-3 run to increase the lead to 46-33 with 3:05 remaining in the quarter. Scranton held a 52-41 advantage at the conclusion of the quarter. The Lady Royals maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the fourth quarter to earn the 67-53 victory.

Bridgette Mann led Scranton with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Katie Broderick scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Katie Feehery added 12 points and eight rebounds' off the Lady Royals' bench.
