Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder women's basketball team opened CCIW play on Saturday night with a 63-46 victory at home against Millikin University (3-2, 0-1 CCIW). Wheaton (4-1, 1-0 CCIW) remains in conference play on Wednesday night when Wheaton travels to Illinois Wesleyan for the first road game of the 2017-18 season.
Maggie Dansdill and
Hannah Frazier each scored 12 points to lead the Thunder.
Kelly Lawson and
Devin Kyler tallied 10 points apiece for the hosts.
Kelly Lawson added seven points. Kyler grabbed nine rebounds, with three assists and three blocked shots. Frazier had seven boards and four blocked shots for the Thunder.
Wheaton shot 38.8% (26-of-67) from the field, including 11.1% (2-of-18) from three-point range. The Big Blue had a 24.5% (13-of-53) field goal percentage including 37.5% (3-for-8) behind the three-point arc. Millikin shot 89.5% (17-of-19) at the free throw line and Thunder had a 64.3% (9-of-14) effort at the charity stripe. The Big Blue owned a 44-41 advantage on the boards and Wheaton held a 12-11 edge on the offensive glass.
The Thunder led Millikin 15-10 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Wheaton out-scored the Big Blue 12-2 in the second quarter to give the hosts a commanding 27-12 advantage at the halftime intermission.
Wheaton tallied 24 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the the 63-46 victory.
Devin Curry led Millikin with 15 points, making three three-pointers. Jordan Hildebrand scored 10 points with five rebounds off the Big Blue bench. Lauren Moses collected 12 rebounds for the guests.
