The Thunder women's basketball team tops Finlandia, 85-50

The Wheaton College women's basketball team (6-3) defeated Finlandia University 85-50 on Saturday in the second game of the weekend for the Thunder at Hope College's "Post Exam Jam". Thunder junior Devin Kyler earned tournament MVP honors; she was joined on the all-tournament team by Maggie Dansdill and Hannah Frazier.

31032Frazier led the Thunder in Saturday's win against the Lions with 14 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Kyler and Jill Berg (PICTURED LEFT) each scored 12 points. Kyler added six rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals. Kelly Lawson scored 11 points with two steals. Erica Van Dusen scored nine points and Jane Ortlip added eight points. Jacqueline San Jule scored seven points off the Thunder bench.

The Thunder posted a 43.2% (32-of-74) field goal percentage in the game, including 40.9% (9-for-22) behind the three-point arc. Finlandia shot 32.1% (18-of-56) from the field, including 37.5% (6-of-16) from three-point range. Wheaton shot 75% (12-of-16) at the free throw line and the Lions posted a 72.7% (8-for-11) effort at the charity stripe. Wheaton edged Finlandia 44-41 in rebounding, including a 19-15 edge for

the Thunder on the offensive glass. Wheaton dominated the inside game with a 42-14 edge for the Thunder in the paint and Wheaton out-scored the Lions 26-9 in points off turnovers.
The Thunder led 10-3 just 5:15 into the game, however, the Lions responded with a 16-5 run to give Finlandia a 19-15 lead with 52-seconds remaining in the first quarter. Finlandia led the Thunder 21-19 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Wheaton dominated play in the second quarter, out-scoring the Lions 24-2. The Thunder scored nine unanswered points to open the second quarter, giving Wheaton a 28-21 lead with 6:15 left before halftime. Finlandia made its first field goal of the quarter with 5:04 remaining for a 28-23 Thunder lead. Wheaton then scored 15-consecutive points to close out the second quarter for Wheaton's 43-23 halftime lead.

The Thunder never trailed by less than 18 points in the second half and led by as many as 40 points late in the fourth quarter.

Julia Daavettila led the Lions with 12 points. Kelsie Richards and Molly Berg each scored 10 points for the Lions. Richards grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Wheaton travels to the Nashville, Tennessee area December 29-30 for participation in the Music City Classic. Wheaton's opening game features the Thunder against No. 22-ranked University of Scranton on December 29.
