Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder men's soccer team had its four-game win streak ended with a 4-1 loss to Illinois Wesleyan in a key CCIW battle for both teams. After not allowing a goal through the last four games, the four goals allowed by the Thunder are a season high. The loss drops Wheaton to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW. Illinois Wesleyan improves to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the CCIW. Wheaton will conclude CCIW action on Wednesday with a trip to Millikin for a 7 pm kickoff.
Each team held long periods of momentum, with the Thunder ultimately holding a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots.
Hasten Biddlecome made one save and allowed four goals in net for the Thunder while the Titans' Joey Johnson stopped four shots and allowed one goal.
The Titans wasted no time asserting themselves on Monday night, striking first on Doug Ballard's team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 11th minute of the match. The Titans would add another goal in the 20th minute with a blast from the top of the 18-yard box to make it 2-0.
Wheaton was slowly able to slow the Titan momentum through the middle of the first half and struck a strong counterpunch in the final minute of the half when
AJ Moyes was brought down in the box to draw a penalty with 21 seconds left.
Drew Shay converted the penalty opportunity for his second goal of the season to cut the haltime lead to 2-1.
The Thunder started the second half strong, dominating the possession and and scoring opportunities. Wheaton's momentum peaked in the 68th minute when Will Woddfin broke free on the touch line and found
Austin Pack whose shot beat Johnson but pounded off the crossbar and back into play, keeping the score at 2-1. Illinois Wesleyan was able to ice the game with a goal off a free kick in the 75th minute and an insurance goal in the 87th minute for the 4-1 victory.
