Wheaton, Ill. - The Thunder women's soccer team hosted fourth-ranked University of Chicago on Wednesday night at Joe Bean Stadium. The Maroons improved to 7-0 on the year with a 3-1 victory against the Thunder.
Chicago's Kelsey Moore scored for the guests in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 lead. A Chicago corner kick was deflected and found Moore who scored the night's first goal. In the 35th minute a hand ball was called on Chicago, awarding Wheaton a penalty kick. Thunder senior
Mary Pettit put her penalty kick opportunity into the top right corner of the net to tie the match at 1-1. Shortly before the halftime intermission the Maroons regained the lead as Adrianna Vera scored the go-ahead goal in the 42nd minute on a Mia Calamari assist. Chicago held a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Sophia Kim accounted for the 3-1 final score when she registered her second goal of the season in the 61st minute. Kim scored from the top right corner of the penalty box on a Jenna McKinney assist.
Chicago owned a 17-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 advantage for the Maroons in shots on goal. Chicago had nine corner kick opportunities in the match and Wheaton had two.
Wheaton starting goalkeeper
Kathryn McGregor made six saves and allowed three goals in 73 minutes of action in the net.
Mary Daghfal made one save, with no goals allowed in 17 minutes of work. Chicago netminder Katie Donovan made three saves and allowed one goal in the match.
Wheaton is now 1-6 on the season. The Thunder will host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
