Women's soccer falls at Wartburg 2-1 on a goal in the final two minutes

Waverly, Iowa. – Wartburg College (4-0-1) used a late goal to defeat the Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Wheaton (1-5-0) took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by freshman Autumn Rasmussen (PICTURED ABOVE) at the 17:50 mark of the match. The rookie's shot went into the upper third of the net to record her fourth goal of the season. Rasmussen, Wheaton's goal-scoring leader for the season, has all four goals for the Thunder this year.

The Knights tied the match at the 25:33 mark on a goal by Nicole Adair that was assisted by Alyssa Drewelow. Adair headed the ball into the net off of the Drewlow corner kick to tie the match at 1-1. The matchup remained tied at 1-1 for the rest of the first half as the two teams went to halftime tied at 1-1.

The score remained tied 1-1 for majority of the second half as the Thunder out-shot the Knights 10-4 in the second half. However, Wartburg's final shot of the match proved critical as a lengthy shot by Adair found the back of the net with just 1:24 remaining in regulation. Adair's long game-winning goal gave the hosts the 2-1 lead that ended the game as the final score.

Wheaton owned a 20-9 advantage in shots today and held a 17-6 edge in shots on goal. The Thunder had seven corner kicks in the match and Wartburg was awarded three.
Thunder goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor made four saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of work in the net. Wartburg netminder Beth Crow stopped 16 Thunder shots and allowed just Rasmussen's first-half goal.

The Thunder will host sixth-ranked University of Chicago on September 21 at 7:00 p.m.
