Newport News, Va. – Christopher Newport University (4-0-0) defeated the Wheaton women's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday night in the final evening of the CNU Captains Classic.
The two squads played a scoreless first half tonight. Wheaton's best scoring opportunity came early in the match on a give-and-go from
Autumn Rasmussen to
Chelsea Gnan, however Gnan's shot went wide right. Wheaton controlled the pace in the final five minutes of the first half, however, the Thunder were unable to capitalize on an opportunity.
Christopher Newport's Taylor Hudgins broke the scoreless tie with a goal at the 69:35 mark of the match to give the hosts the 1-0 lead that would become the final score about 20 minutes later.
The Captains attempted 20 shots in the match, including seven shots on goal. Wheaton was credited with nine goals, including three on goal. Christopher Newport was awarded two corner kicks and Wheaton had one.

Kathryn McGregor made six saves and allowed just the second-half goal. CNU's Carly Maglio made three saves in posting the shut out.
Wheaton (1-3-0) travels to Wartburg on Sept. 14 for a matchup with the Knights.
