Women's soccer earns its fourth-consecutive win with a 1-0 victory at Carthage

The Wheaton College women's soccer team earned its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at Carthage College (5-5-0, 0-2-0 CCIW). Wheaton is now 5-6-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in CCIW action as Wheaton has shutout its last three opponents.

The first half was evenly contested as each team attempted five shots in the opening 45 minutes of the match, including three shots on goal for each team. The two teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 0-0.

23437Wheaton and Carthage both had scoring opportunities in the second half. The Thunder capitalized in the at the 80:29 mark of the match when freshman Autumn Rasmussen (PICTURED LEFT) tallied her team-best sixth goal of the year. Rasmussen's goal was assisted by Molly Thorson. Carthage's Aubrey Quick had a shot on goal in the 85th minute that was stopped Wheaton goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor. Quick's attempt was Carthage's final shot on goal of the evening as Wheaton emerged with the 1-0 victory.

Thunder head coach Pete Felske noted after the game, "We are not playing very good soccer right now but we are finding a way to win. The Defense is playing hard and giving us a chance." He concluded, "Our Goalkeeping was very strong tonight and when you do not give up goals you have a chance to win."


McGregor made six saves for the Thunder in recording her third consecutive shutout. The Thunder senior has played 316 minutes of scoreless soccer dating back to September 24. Carthage goalkeeper Emily Furmanek stopped four shots and allowed one goal in her 90 minutes of work in the net.

Carthage held a 13-10 advantage in shots in tonight's match, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Each team was awarded nine corner kicks in the match.

Wheaton will host Carroll University on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 in a Homecoming weekend matchup at Joe Bean Stadium.
