Whitman's overtime goal gives the Thunder women's soccer team a 2-1 win against Augustana

The Thunder women's soccer team picked up its seventh victory in its last eight games on Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime victory at Joe Bean Stadium against Augustana (7-7-0, 1-4-0 CCIW). Wheaton improves to 8-7 on the year and is now 5-1 in conference play.

The two squads played scoreless soccer in the first half of play. Wheaton held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes of play, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.

22197Augustana broke the 0-0 tie on a goal by the Vikings' Jessa Rizzo at the 61:05 mark of the match. Rizzo's go-ahead goal came from in front of the Thunder net and was assisted by Mady Huber. Augustana maintained its 1-0 lead until the 74:48 mark of the match when Wheaton's Sarah Van Wingerden (PICTURED LEFT) scored for the Thunder. Van Wingerden collected a loose ball and put it into the back of the net off of a Morgan Whitman assist. The contest remained tied at 1-1 for the rest of the second half. Wheaton owned a 6-3 edge in shots in the second half, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Wheaton had a break-away opportunity early in the first overtime and the Thunder took advantage as an Anna Saunders cross was collected by Whitman who deftly put it past Augustana goalkeeper Bailey Bradford for the game-winning goal at the 91:32 mark of the match.

Wheaton goalkeeper Kathryn McGregor made two saves in the Thunder net, with one goal allowed in nearly 92 minutes of action. Bailey stopped six Thunder shots and allowed two goals as the Vikings' netminder.

Wheaton out-shot the Vikings 16-6 in the game and the hosts had an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Wheaton was awarded six corner kicks in the match and Augustana had three.

Wheaton will travel to North Central on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for a CCIW matchup with the Cardinals.
