The Wheaton Thunder women's soccer team (2-0) emerged with a 2-1 victory against William Smith College (0-1) on Friday afternoon at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium. The highly anticipated matchup featuring two nationally-ranked teams pitted the 10th-ranked Herons and 18th-ranked Wheaton in the opening day of Wheaton's Bob Baptista Invitational.

17385Wheaton struck first in the matchup as a long pass from Mary Pettit connected with sophomore Morgan Whitman (PICTURED LEFT) who headed the ball over the arms of William Smith netminder Veronica Romines just 12:52 into the contest. Each team attempted four shots in the first half.

The Herons pressured the Wheaton defense throughout the second half. The William Smith attack paid off for the guests at 75:14 into the match when Brie Ruane scored from the left side off of a Kate Spiegel assist. The Heron's possessed the ball for the majority of the second half, out-shooting the Thunder 18-4 with an 11-1 edge in shots on goal. Thunder netminder Abbey Fuster and the Wheaton defense managed to keep the guest of the scoreboard for the final 14 minutes of regulation as the contest went into overtime.

The Herons again controlled the first overtime with a 5-0 advantage in shots in the opening extra session. Futher made three saves in the first overtime as the two teams headed to the second and final overtime.

Wheaton's first quality shot of either overtime period came in the 105th minute as Wheaton All-American Ally Witt snatched the ball from the Herons at William Smith's end of the field and deftly moved the ball to Kristin Rauh who put the ball into the opposite corner of the net to give Wheaton the dramatic 2-1 overtime win.

Fuster had a strong effort in net for the Thunder with nine saves and one goal allowed. Romines made three saves in the Herons' net and allowed two goals. William Smith out-shot the Thunder 27-9, with a 13-1 edge in corner kicks.
