Game Recap: Volleyball |

The Wheaton volleyball team closes out its trip to Atlanta at the Emory National Invitational

Atlanta, Ga. – The Thunder volleyball team concluded its participation in Emory University's National Invitational Tournament on Saturday. Franklin & Marshall bested the Thunder on Saturday morning 3-0 and sixth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis earned a 3-0 decision against the Thunder in the afternoon.

Wheaton (4-9) will be off until Sept. 26 when the Thunder will take on UW-La Cross and UW-Stevens Point at the CCIW-WIAC Crossover tournament, hosted by Elmhurst College.

In Saturday morning's 3-0 Franklin & Marshall win against the Thunder, the Diplomats opened with a 25-19 victory in the first set. Franklin & Marshall earned a 25-20 win in the second set and closed out the match with a 25-15 victory in the third set.

Thunder junior Shelby Knowles led Wheaton with 11 kills and she added nine digs. Freshman Sydney Vischer tallied seven kills and fellow freshman Jessica Bosse led the Thunder with a match-high 13 digs. Freshman setter Kelly Thornton distributed 12 assists and Ashley Torok had 11 assists.

The sixth-ranked Bears of Washington University picked up the 3-0 victory against Wheaton with a 25-17 victory in the first set, a 25-10 win in the second set and a 27-25 victory in the decisive third set. The Bears advanced out to a 16-11 lead in the third set, but Wheaton out-scored WashU 9-4 to tie the set at 20-20. The Thunder gained a lead in the set at 23-21, however, the Bears rallied for the 27-25 victory.

Knowles again led Wheaton with 12 kills and she added 15 digs.  Vischer registered nine kills and Bosse tallied 21 digs. Torok led the Thunder with 12 assists.

Thunder head coach Brittany Smith noted of her team's four-match trip to Georgia, "I'm really proud of my team. We've face so much adversity with illness and injury this weekend, all against 3 top 10 teams. They never gave up, continued to fight, and represented Wheaton volleyball well. We have some things to work on, and need to establish more accountability with consistent effort. But overall, this has been a great weekend, and I'm seeing the right things to keep me positive about our future."
