Wheaton, Ill. - A barrage of shots and an exceptional night by
Marshall Hollingsworth wasn't quite enough as the Thunder men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie against Rose-Hulman on Saturday night. Wheaton scored early in the match but had to rally after two quick goals by the Engineers early in the second half gave the edge to the visitors. Wheaton moves to 3-2-1 on the season while Rose-Hulman is now 4-2-1.
Wheaton dominated the attack, outshooting the Engineers 34-6 with a 15-3 edge in shots on target.
Matt Paprocki allowed two goals and made one save in 110 minutes. Rose-Hulman's Carter Wright stole the show with 13 saves while allowing two goals.
Marshall Hollingsworth gave Wheaton an early 1-0 lead when he scored on a breakaway in the 12th minute. Wheaton continued to pepper the net with chances but the Engineers were able to hold the line and keep the one-goal score in tact until halftime.
After an early save by Wright to start the second half, Rose-Hulman was able to get on teh scoreboard when Turner Perkins scored in the 50th minute and subsequently took the lead in the 58th minute when Perkins scored off a corner kick.
The lead would be short lived as Hollingsworth converted an
Elliot Borge assist for his fifth goal of the young season to tie the score at two apiece. Wheaton narrowly missed taking the lead two minutes later when
Kolby Versage's shot hit the post and carromed away in the 63rd minute.
The post proved friendly again for the guests late in the first overtime when Borge's shot in the post early in the 100th minute and a follow-up header by
Stephen Golz was saved.
Wheaton will next be in action on Wednesday night when the Thunder host Benedictine University at 7 PM at Joe Bean Stadium.
