Wheaton, Ill. - A back and forth affair went Wheaton's way on Wednesday night as the Thunder scored late to defeat Benedictine 3-2 at Joe Bean Stadium.
Marshall Hollingsworth played the role of the hero on Wednesday night by breaking loose behind the Eagles defense to score the game-winning goal just 36 seconds after the Eagles had tied the game at 2-2 in the 84th minute. The win moves Wheaton to 4-2-1 on the season and Benedictine falls to 3-5 overall with the loss. Wheaton is back in action at Joe Bean Stadium on Friday night when the Thunder host the University of Chicago Maroons at 7 PM.

Wheaton had early scoring opportunities when
Ben Bakke narrowly missed wide left with a shot in the eighth minute and
Elliot Borge also missed left on an 11th minute attempt. Benedictine was able to balance the possession in the ensuing minutes and looking to push themselves ahead in the 32nd minute but a goal was waived off because of an offsides call against the Eagles. The mistake proved costly when
Jon Clark (PICTURED RIGHT)
found the back off the night 34 seconds later on a
Noah Gulley assist to give Wheaton the 1-0 lead. Unphased, Benedictine responded by punching in a true goal 25 seconds after Clark's goal to tie the score at 1-1.
Following the rush of action, the half returned to a slower pace being played in the middle third of the field and the game remained 1-1 at halftime despite a 10-5 edge in shots for the Thunder. Wheaton would finish the game with a 23-13 edge in attempts.
With the action again bogged down in the middle third, Wheaton slowly built the momentum and finally tipped the game in their favor when
Stephen Golz collected a blocked shot attempt from Mitchel Grove and
slotted a beautiful shot in the right corner of the net to give Wheaton a 2-1 lead at the 76:12 mark.
The Thunder continued to push for an insurance goal in the closing minutes but Benedictine was able to counter against the run of play and Erik Stammer netted second goal of the night at the 83:29 mark of the game to tie the game at 2-2. Wheaton immediately answered off the ensuing kickoff, playing the ball to the back line while
Marshall Hollingsworth started his run into space and was played open behind the Eagles defense by a deft pass from
Elliot Borge.
Hollingsworth beat the keeper low and to the far post to give Wheaton a 3-2 lead 84:05 into the match.
Matt Paprocki made one of his three saves in the 88th minute on another Stammer attempt to hold off the Eagles and earn the victory.
