Atlanta, Ga. – The Thunder volleyball team opened up its participation in Emory University's National Invitational Tournament.
Ninth-ranked Cal Lutheran topped the Thunder on Friday afternoon 3-0 and
tenth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned a 3-1 decision against the Thunder in the evening.
Wheaton (4-7) will face Franklin & Marshall at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) on Saturday in Atlanta and conclude participation in the tournament at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) against sixth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis.
In the matchup against Cal Lutheran the Regals won the first set 25-18 and picked up a 25-11 in the second set. Cal Lutheran closed out the win with a 25-16 win in the third set for the 3-0 victory.
Junior
Shelby Knowles registered a team-high eight kills in the match against Cal Lutheran.
Emily Potts tallied five kills. Ashely Torok had 12 assists in the match and
Kelli Manning made a tea-best 16 digs.
In Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' 3-1 victory against the Thunder, the Athenas picked up a 25-21 victory in the first set. Wheaton was a 28-26 winner in the second set and CMS closed out the match with a 25-16 victory in the third set and a 25-19 win in the fourth and final set.
Knowles had 17 kill in the win against CMS and she added 19 digs. Amanda Smith registered nine kills and
Hannah Japp added seven kills. Freshman setter
Kelly Thornton had 19 assists for the Thunder and Torok added 18 assists. Freshman
Jessica Bosse recorded a team-high 25 digs and Torok had 17 digs.
