The Wheaton softball team beats #13-ranked North Central 5-4 in the opening round of the 2015 CCIW Tournament

Bloomington, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team returned to the CCIW Softball Tournament for the first time since 2011 on Thursday and earned a 5-4 victory against North Central (31-6) in the tournament's opening round. Third-seeded Wheaton (24-14), making its fourth all-time appearance in the conference tournament, will face either fourth-seed Augustana (25-12) or top-seed Illinois Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. tonight at Illinois Wesleyan (33-7).

16688 Wheaton scored five runs, on eight hits with no errors in today's win against North Central and the Cardinals tallied four runs, on nine hits with three errors. Thunder junior Katie Thornton (15-8) earned the win for the Thunder. Thornton worked seven innings, allowing four runs, on nine hits, with three walks and two strikeouts.

Ellen Radandt was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI thanks to a crucial three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. Christina Sandstedt (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-3 in the game with a pair of doubles. Emily Bonga was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.

Neither team mustered much offense in the first two innings. Bonga collected Wheaton's first hit when she had a single to right field in the top of the third inning. North Central scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, capitalizing on a three-run home run as the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead.

16696Wheaton responded with an outburst of offense in the top of the fifth inning. B­­onga (PICTURED RIGHT) led off the inning with a double to right centerfield and then Becky Leone and Julia Arthur each reached base as the result of a pair of North Central errors. A RBI-single by shortstop Megan Neuhaus cut the North Central lead to 3-2 as Leone scored on the play. Radandt blasted a three-run homer to centerfield to give Wheaton the 5-4 lead. Thornton limited North Central to just three hits in the final three innings as Wheaton advanced to tonight's game in the winner's bracket.

Note Worthy: Today's win marked the second time in school history Wheaton has won a first-round game in the double elimination tournament the program's third overall win in the CCIW Tournament...Wheaton's 24 victories this season gives this year's team sole possession of the program's single-season record for wins…Radandt's home run is her eighth of the year, which is second-most in a single season in school history...Alyssa Leonard had her school-record 24-game hit streak snapped in the win.
