Kentwood, Mich. – The Thunder softball team swept Calvin College (7-9) on Friday in a doubleheader. Wheaton earned an 8-0 win in six innings in the opener and the Thunder earned a 15-5 victory in the final game of the twinbill. Wheaton (10-7) will conclude its weekend trip to Michigan on Saturday with a doubleheader at Hope College.

Wheaton picked up the 8-0 win in today's first game as the Thunder scored eight runs, on seven hits with three errors and Calvin was scoreless with two hits and one error. Thunder starting pitcher Katie Thornton (6-4) earned the win in six innings. She held the Knights scoreless on just two hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Thunder leftfielder Alyssa Leonard (PICTURED LEFT) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and one run driven in. Christina Sandstedt was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Wheaton scored six runs in the top of the second inning to take an early 6-0 lead. Leonard hit a RBI-single in the innings and Sandstedt hit a two-run single. The Thunder added a run in the top of the fourth inning and another in the sixth to close out the win.

Wheaton utilized some big innings in the second game to earn the 15-5 win as the Thunder scored 15 runs, on 16 hits, with one error and Calvin College five runs, on nine hits and four errors. Starting pitcher Abby Butler worked two innings, allowing four runs, with one earned run, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Kendall Kehres (PICTURED RIGHT) pitched five innings of relief as she allowed one run, on six hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Thornton was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBI and three runs scored. Sandstedt was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Ellen Radandt (PICTURED LEFT) was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Abby Coster was 2-for-4 with a run scored and freshman centerfielder Julia Arthur was 2-for-4.

For the second consecutive inning, Wheaton scored six runs in the top of the second inning as a three-run triple by Leonard highlighted the inning for the Thunder. Wheaton extended its lead to 7-0 in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by Megan Neuhaus. The Knights cut Wheaton's lead to 7-4 with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Wheaton added five more runs in the top of the sixth inning to increase its lead to 12-4 as Thornton hit a two-run single and Radandt hit a RBI-single.  

Calvin scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 12-5. Wheaton plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 15-5 final score.
