Thunder bats awaken in 11-1 run-rule victory over Loras

Winter Haven, Fla.
- Two big innings and a couple of big defensive plays proved to be the winning formula for the Thunder baseball team on Monday morning. Wheaton scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cruise to an 11-1 victory in seven innings over the Loras Duhawks. Wheaton pounded out a season-high 15 hits to improve to 3-3 on the season while Loras falls to 4-2 after gathering only six hits.

Tyler Sigler set the tone for the Thunder attack by leading off the top of the second with an infield single. Sigler then stole second and third base before jogging home on a triple off the right field fence by Kyle Mellinger. Mellinger scored on a sacrifice fly by JD Carpenter to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead. Carpenter also drove in Wheaton's second run with a bases loaded walk in the top of the third inning to plate Matt Krause.

16566A big two-out rally broke the game open in the top of the fourth when Krause was hit by a pitch. Peter Newman singled through the left side and Johnny Peltz reached on an infield single that scored Krause on a bobble by the Duhawk second baseman. A wild pitch moved each runner up 90 feet and both runners would score on a double to left-center by Sigler. Sigler promptly was waved in on a Mellinger (PICTURED RIGHT) single that gave Wheaton a 7-0 edge.

Loras pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Wheaton would not let the Duhawks get any closer due to a four-run sixth. Sigler and Carpenter each tallied their third RBI of the day with singles and Kyle Trivits punctuated the inning with a two-run single to center, making it 11-1.

Wheaton limited the Duhawk offense thanks to two double plays in the game. Kaufman helped his own cause with a nice defensive play to cut down a bunt attempt and Matt Schappell's diving play up the middle in the second inning shut the door on the Duhawk inning.

Wheaton will continue its play in Floriday with a 9 AM contest against Fontbonne University tomorrow morning.
