Clermont, Fla. – The Wheaton College softball team opened up its 10-game Spring Break trip on Saturday. The Thunder defeated Cornell College 7-2 in Saturday's first game. Case Western Reserve topped Wheaton 13-5 in the second game of the day. Wheaton will take on Wittenberg University and Moravian in a pair of games on Monday morning.
In Saturday's win against Cornell, the Thunder scored seven runs, on six hits, committing three errors and Cornell plated two runs, on three hits with one error. Thunder starting pitcher
Katie Thornton earned the win in seven innings. Thornton allowed two runs, both unearned, on three hits with six walks and four strikeouts.
Cornell scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning, however, Wheaton countered with six runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 6-2 lead. A two-run single by
Julia Arthur helped key the inning as did a RBI-double by
Anne Kelley.
Ellen Radandt led off the fifth inning with a double and later scored on a RBI by
Becky Leone to account for the 7-2 win.
Radandt was 2-for-2 with a double as she scored twice and drove in a run.
Alyssa Leonard was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Arthur was 1-for-2 in the game with two RBI, a run scored and a walk.
In the loss to Case Western, Thornton hit a pair of doubles and scored one run. Freshman shortstop
Megan Neuhaus drove in one run and she scored once for the Thunder. Radandt was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
