PICTURED ABOVE: Johnny Peltz had three doubles and a triple in Tuesday's doubleheader loss to Carthage.

Carol Stream, Ill.
- Two out hits proved to be the difference on Tuesday afternoon as the Thunder baseball team dropped a conference doubleheader against Carthage College. Wheaton couldn't come up with the big hit down the stretch in game one before the Red Men capitalized in extra innings to take game one 4-3 in 10 innings. Carthage blew open a pitcher's duel in game two with a four-run seventh inning to sweep the twinbill with a 7-1 victory. Carthage improves to 14-2 on the season and 5-0 in CCIW play while Wheaton falls to 7-14 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Thunder and Red men will conclude their three-game series next Wednesday in Kenosha.

Wheaton survived an early scare in the top of the first inning when Matt Schappell threw out a Red Men runner at the plate to end the inning. Wheaton then took the lead with a two-out double by Johnny Peltz to score Josh Kimmel in the bottom of the first. Kimmel added to Wheaton's lead with an RBI groundout in bottom of the second.

Carthage answered in the top of the sixth with a run and loaded the bases with no outs but Nick Johnson (PICTURED RIGHT) induced a double play and got a fly out to keep the scored tied at three apiece. Wheaton loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the eighth inning following a Peltz triple but could not capitalize. Wheaton also came up empty with a runner on third in the bottom of the ninth. Carthage took the lead in the top of the 10th with a two out double to right field. Wheaton put runners on first and second with one out in the home half of the 10th before a double play ball brought an end to the rally.

The Red Men scored their four runs on 13 hits with one error while Wheaton scored three runs on 11 hits with two errors. Johnny Peltz went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple for the Thunder. Josh Kimmel and Matt Schappell each had two hits in five at-bats.

Back to back doubles by Peltz and Andrew Laucella gave Wheaton a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning but Carthage tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth. The score held at 1-1 until Carthage rallied for four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-1 lead. Carthage added two runs in the top of the ninth inning with a one-out home run to account for the 7-1 final.

Wheaton will be back in action on Friday when the Thunder open a three-game series against the Elmhurst Bluejays with a 1 PM doubleheader at Lee Pfund Stadium.
