Carol Stream, Ill.
- The Thunder baseball team split a doubleheader against the Elmhurst College Bluejays on Friday afternoon at Lee Pfund Stadium. Both teams earned victories via shutouts as Elmhurst took game one 4-0 and Wheaton returned the favor with a 6-0 win in game two. The Thunder and Bluejays will play the rubber match of their three-game series on Saturday at 1 PM at Butterfield Park in Elmhurst. Elmhurst is now 6-13 overall and 1-6 in CCIW play. Wheaton is 8-15 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

16735After being shutout in the opener, Matt Krause gave Wheaton its first lead of the game with a leadoff home run, his foruth round-tripper of the season. Wheaton added a second run in the inning when an Elmhurst throwing error allowed Andrew Laucella to score. Johnny Peltz made the score 3-0 in the third when he plated Kyle Mellinger with a double to left field. A throwing error on a double steal allowed Mellinger to trot home in the bottom of the fourth inning for Wheaton's fourth run. A Laucella squeeze bunt in the seventh made it 5-0 Thunder and a passed ball plated Peltz later in the inning to give Wheaton a six-run lead.

On the mound, Michael Kaufman was lights out through four innings before Elmhurst threatened in the top of the fifth. Peltz ended the Bluejay fifth with a strong throw from right field to cut down an Elmhurst runner at the plate for the third out of the inning. Kaufman stranded two more runners in the seventh inning but needed help to escape the Elmhurst eighth. A single and a pair of walks chased Kaufman with two outs in eighth but Nick Johnson came up with a big strikeout to end the inning. Ty Hoeksema pitched a perfect ninth inning to close the game.

Kyle Mellinger (PICTURED RIGHT) was three-for-three with three runs scored in the nightcap. Johnny Peltz was two-for-four.

Elmhurst used the long ball to get their first two runs in the first game, utitlizing a solo shot in the fifth and a second solo homer in the top of the ninth that brought an end to John Schmitz' start. Schmitz allowed only two runs on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Elmhurst took advantage of a series of walks and an error to push across two more runs in the top of the ninth for the 4-0 win.
