The Thunder baseball team splits a doubleheader at Millikin

Decatur, Ill. – The Wheaton baseball team split a CCIW doubleheader at Millikin on Saturday afternoon as the Big Blue picked up a 5-1 win in the opener and Wheaton closed out the twinbill with a 5-2 win in the nightcap. Today's split paired with a Thunder win on Friday against Millikin to give Wheaton the series win in the CCIW-opening series against the Big Blue (9-8, 1-2 CCIW).

Wheaton earned the 5-2 win in today's second game as the Thunder scored five runs, on nine hits with one error and Millikin tallied two runs on nine hits with no errors. Junior Josh Arevalo (2-1) earned the win in 7-1/3 innings. He allowed two runs, on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Nick Johnson earned the save in 1-2/3 innings of scoreless relief as he scattered two hits and struck out two batters.

Matt Krause was 3-for-5 at the plate in the second game. The Thunder shortstop tallied a pair of doubles and a home run as he drove in three runs and scored twice. John McKenna was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Tyler Sigler hit a double.

Millikin was a 5-1 victor in the opening game as the Big Blue scored five runs, on nine hits, with one error and the Thunder plated one run, on seven hits with two errors. Wheaton junior Michael Kaufman (2-2) started the game for the Thunder as he allowed five runs, including three earned runs, on nine hits, with six strikeouts and no walks. Peter Moran worked 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief.

Designated hitter Andrew Laucella was 2-for-2 at the plate with two walks. Centerfielder Josh Kimmel was 2-for-4 with a walk in the game.

Wheaton (7-12, 2-1 CCIW) will host Carthage for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
