Winter Haven, Fla. - The Thunder baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Beloit College on Friday afternoon. The Bucs rode the big inning to a 7-2 victory in the first game and took advantage of Thunder miscues for an 8-6 victory in the nightcap. Beloit improves to 5-2 on the season while Wheaton falls to 4-6. The Thunder will wrap up their Florida trip with a 10 AM (EST) game against Ramapo in Auburndale.
Beloit managed seven runs on nine hits in the opener and eight runs on 11 hits with three errors in the nightcap. Wheaton scored two runs on seven hits with one error in the first game and six runs on 10 hits with three errors in the second game.
Beloit used a three-run third inning to break a scoreless tie in the opener on Friday afternoon. Wheaton cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Matt Krause hit a solo home run to make it 3-1. The Bucs pushed across four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
Ty Sigler's RBI single in the sixth cut the lead to 7-2 but Wheaton would not rally in the seventh to account for the final score.
The Thunder put the first four hitters on base in the top of the first inning of the nightcap and took a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by
Johnny Peltz, an RBI groundout by
Andrew Laucella and a sacrifice fly by Krause. Beloit took advantage of a pair of walks and scored tied the game in the bottom of the first.

Wheaton retook the lead when
Matt Schappell reached on an error allowing
Kyle Trivits to score.
Kyle Mellinger drove in
Josh Kimmel (PICTURED RIGHT) later in the inning to make it 5-3. The Bucs rode a crucial error in the bottom of the second to three more runs and took a 6-5 lead. Beloit added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth after another error but
John Schmitz stranded the bases loaded to limit the damage.
John McKenna reached on a two-out error in the top of the sixth and scored on a Schappell single to cut the Bucs lead to 8-6. Mellinger nearly tied the game with a deep drive to right later in the inning but the ball hung in the air and was caught to end the inning. Wheaton could not put together a rally in the top of the seventh and fell by the same score.
