The Thunder softball team extends its win streak to five games with wins against Lakeland and Bates

The Wheaton softball team finished its Spring Break trip to Florida on Thursday with two wins. Wheaton opened its afternoon with an 8-2 win against Lakeland College and closed the trip with a 9-1 victory in five innings versus Bates College.

Today's two wins improved Wheaton's winning streak to five games as the squad is now 6-3 on the season. Wheaton will return to action March 19 in a doubleheader at Aurora University.
In the victory against Lakeland, Wheaton scored eight runs, on 14 hits with one error and the Muskies plated two runs, on four hits with one error. Katie Thornton (4-1) earned the win in seven innings of work. She allowed two runs, with one earned run, on four hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.

Lyndsey Pritchard was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Thunder with two doubles and one run scored. Julia Arthur was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a runs scored. Emily Bonga had a 2-for-4 effort with a double as she scored two runs. Freshman shortstop Megan Neuhaus was 2-for-4 with a RBI.

Wheaton's Alyssa Leonard scored a run for the Thunder in the top of the first inning as Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning Thornton led off the inning with a double and scored on a RBI-single three batters later by Arthur. Wheaton broke the game open with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Christina Sandstedt hit a RBI-double in the key sixth inning. Lakeland scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Wheaton countered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final score of 8-2. A RBI-single by Arthur and a RBI-double by Ellen Radandt helped lead the way for the Thunder in the seventh inning.

The Thunder topped Bates 9-1 in the final game of the trip. The Thunder scored nine runs, on seven hits with two errors and Bates plated one run on two hits with three errors. Abby Butler (2-0) earned the win in five innings for the Thunder. She allowed one unearned run, on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Seven Wheaton players collected one hit for the Thunder.

Wheaton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Sandstedt hit a two-run double. Bates scored its lone run in the top of the third inning. The Thunder countered with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-run single by Pritchard. Wheaton extended its lead to 6-1 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning that was highlighted by a two-run double by Radandt. Abby Coster scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Wheaton the eight-run rule win.
