GAME STATS Clermont, Fla. - The Wheaton softball team was scheduled to face Transylvania University on Wednesday night in a doubleheader. Wheaton defeated the Pioneers 2-1 in the first game of the twinbill. In the second game fo the doubleheader the contest endured a rain delay and was eventually canceled due to the weather.
Wheaton scored its two runs on eight hits, committing one error. The Pioneers scored one run, being held to just one hit with one Transylvania error. Wheaton pitcher
Katie Thornton (3-1) earned the win in seven innings of work. She allowed just one run, on one hit. The junior struck out seven and walked seven.
Alyssa Leonard was 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman outfielder
Julia Arthur was 2-for-3, hitting two doubles, with a pair of runs scored.
Emily Bonga hit a double while Thornton, Pritchard and
Christina Sandstedt each contributed singles.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a RBI-single by Prtichard. The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as a RBI-double, the first and only hit for Transylvania, scored a run. Arthur led off the top of the seventh inning with a double for the Thunder and she scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Pritchard. The Pioneers batted three-up-and-three down in the bottom of the seven as Wheaton secured its third consecutive victory.
The Thunder (4-3) will conclude its 10-game trip to Florida on Thursday. Wheaton will play Lakeland at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday and the squad will wrap up the trip at 3:00 p.m. against Bates.
