GAME STATS 2 PICTURED ABOVE: (4-5) took the loss in seven innings. Thornton (PICTURED LEFT) allowed three runs, including just one earned run, on four hits, with five strikeouts and seven walks.
Katie Yergler, Stacey Cladis, Jeannie Vest and Thornton each collected singles to account for Wheaton's four hits in the game. Carthage gained the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning on a home run for the Lady Reds and the guests added an additional run in the top of the seventh inning.
Carthage earned the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two. The Lady Reds scored five runs, on 10 hits, with two errors and Wheaton plated three runs, on seven hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher Marissa Voss (2-3) took the loss in 2-1/3 innings of work. She allowed four runs, on seven hits. Abby Butler pitched 2-2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run, on two hits, with one strikeout. Thornton pitched one inning of scoreless relief, allowing one hit, with two strikeouts and one walk.
Jessica Goeke was 2-for-4 in the game for the hosts. Yergler and Becky Leone each hit doubles for Wheaton in the game.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Thunder scored as a result of a pair of Carthage errors. The Lady Reds tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Carthage plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to gain 4-1 advantage on the Thunder.
Wheaton countered in the top of the fourth inning as Thornton hit a one-out single and Leone followed with a double to right centerfield. Emily Bonga drove in Thornton with a RBI-single and Leone scored on a sacrifice by Abby Coster to cut the Carthage lead to 4-3. The Lady Reds added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a the 5-3 lead that would become the final score.
Wheaton is slated to return to action on Wednesday when the Thunder hosts Augustana for a CCIW doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. at Ruth Leedy Field.
