Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Hope College on Friday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton picked up a convincing 10-2 win in five innings to win the first game. The Thunder secured the sweep by rallying with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the nightcap 8-5. Wheaton is now 12-4 on the season, while Hope falls to 5-6.
Wheaton won today's opener 10-2 with 10 runs, on 13 hits, with one errors and Hope scored two runs, on four hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Katie Thornton (4-3) earned the win in five innings. Thornton allowed two unearned runs, on four hits, with six strikeouts and three walks.
Senior
Stacey Cladis (PICTURED LEFT) was 3-for-3 at the plate in the opener with a double and a home run. Cladis scored three times and drove in two runs.
Alyssa Leonard had a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.
Christina Sandstedt was 2-for-2, with three runs and one RBI. Sandstedt hit a double and drew a walk. Thornton helped her own cause with two hits in three at bats as she drove in a run.
Hope scored two runs in the top of the first inning and Wheaton responded with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead. Leonard (PICTURED RIGHT) highlighted the inning for the Thunder with a two-run single, Thornton added a RBI single and Sandstedt belted a RBI-double. Wheaton added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning as Cladis blasted a two-run home run over the leftfield fence.
Abby Coster and
Jessica Goeke each hit RBI singles in the inning as Wheaton led the Flying Dutch 8-2 after two innings. The Thunder added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as
Jeannie Vest and Leonard each hit RBI-singles to account for Wheaton's 10 runs in the game.
Wheaton rallied for the 8-5 win in the second game as the Thunder scored eight runs on 11 hits, with no errors. Starting pitcher
Abby Butler worked 2-2/3 innings for the Thunder, allowing four runs, on six hits, with three walks and one strikeout. Marissa Voss (2-1) picked up the win in 4-1/3 innings of relief as she allowed one run, on three hits, with four strikeouts and three walks.
Becky Leone led Wheaton with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, with two runs and one RBI.
Katie Yergler was 2-for-3, with a walk and two runs scored.
Hope gained a 4-0 lead on the Thunder with four Flying Dutch runs in the top of the third inning. The Thunder cut the Hope lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Leone scored on a wild pitch and Thornton drove in a run with a RBI-single to centerfield.
Hope increased its lead to 5-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but Wheaton responded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. Pinch hitter
Abby Coster led off the sixth inning for the Thunder with a double to left field and Voss reached on a Hope fielding error. Leone singled to right field to drive in Coster. A two-run single by Goeke tied the game at 5-5 and Sandstedt gave Wheaton a 7-5 lead with a two-run double. Cladis continued the hit-parade for the Thunder with a RBI-single to centerfield that accounted for the 8-5 final score.
