Wheaton, Ill. – The Thunder softball team hosted Benedictine University (6-5) on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton earned a 2-1 victory in the first game and the Eagles picked up an 11-6 win in the second game. Wheaton, now 10-4 on the season, will host Hope College on Friday for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
Wheaton won today's opener 2-1 as the Thunder scored two runs, on eight hits, with no errors and Benedictine scored one run, on eight hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher
Katie Thornton (3-3) earned the win in seven innings. She allowed one run, on three hits, with five walks and seven strikeouts.
Abby Coster was 2-for-2 at the plate, with a double and walk as she scored a run.
Jessica Goeke was 2-for-3, with a RBI.
Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. Wheaton plated its run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI-single by Thornton (PICTURED LEFT).
Abby Coster hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and she scored two batters later on a RBI-single to centerfield by Goeke to give Wheaton a 2-1 lead that would become the final score.
Benedictine won the nightcap 11-6 as the Eagles scored 11 runs, on 17 hits, with four errors and Wheaton plated six runs, on 13 hits, with one error. Thunder starting pitcher (1-1) took the loss in two innings as she gave up three runs, on five hits, with two walks.
Abby Butler worked three innings of relief as she allowed six runs, on 10 hits, with one strikeout. Thornton pitched two innings of relief as she allowed two runs, on two hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
Coster continued her strong day with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, with two runs.
Alyssa Leonard was 2-for-4, with two RBI.
Jessica Goeke (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-4, with a run and a RBI, while
Christina Sandstedt was 2-for-4. Leonard hit a double and Yergler collected a triple.
Benedictine scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added another in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Wheaton cut the Eagles' lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning as
Emily Bonga hit her first career home run.
Benedictine scored one run in the top of the third inning and added three more in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 7-1. Wheaton scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Yergler hit a RBI-triple, while Goeke and
Stacey Cladis each hit RBI-singles.
Benedictine added two runs in the top of the fifth inning and Wheaton responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Leonard drove in a pair of runs with a single. The Eagles plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning to account for the 11-6 final score.
