GAME STATS 2 Clermont, Fla. – The Thunder softball team concluded its 10-game trip to Florida on Friday with a pair of wins. Wheaton topped Oswego State 12-7 early in the afternoon and ended the trip with a 5-4 win in nine innings against Simmons College.
Wheaton has won seven consecutive games and is now 8-2 on the year. Wheaton is schedule to return to action on March 20 at Calvin College for a doubleheader against the Knights.
Wheaton defeated Oswego State 12-7 in Friday's first game as the Thunder scored 12 runs, on 12hits, with four errors and Oswego State plated seven runs, on eight hits, with three errors. Wheaton scored nine runs in the top of the first inning to gain the early advantage and never look back in Friday's win against Oswego State.
Abby Butler earned the win for the Thunder in four innings of work. She allowed three runs, with one earned run, on three this , with one strikeout.
Lyndsey Pritchard pitched three innings as she allowed four runs, with one earned run, on five hits and one strikeout.
Christina Sandstedt was 3-for-5, with three runs scored and a double.
Stacey Cladis was 3-for-5, with a double. Cladis drove in three runs and scored once.
Alyssa Leonard was 3-for-5, with two RBI and one run scored.
Wheaton defeated Simmons College 5-4 in nine innings to conclude the week-long trip. Wheaton took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning which was highlighted by a RBI-single for Sandstedt. Simmons cut the Wheaton lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the fourth inning, however a run for
Katie Yergler in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed Wheaton to increase its lead to 3-1.
Simmons scored one run in the top of the sixth inning and added another in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3. Simmons scored a run in the top of the eighth inning, however, Wheaton's
Alyssa Leonard drove in a run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the contest at 4-4 and send it to the ninth inning. Sandstedt drove home
Becky Leone in the bottom of the ninth inning for the game-winning run.
Katie Thornton earned the win for the Thunder in nine innings of work. Thornton allowed four runs in the game, on six hits, with five walks and 11 strikeouts.
