Thunder softball picks up wins against Cornell (Iowa) and St. Scholastica

GAME STATS 1 | GAME STATS 2 Clermont, Fla. - The Thunder softball team earned two wins on Wednesday afternoon. Wheaton defeated Cornell College (Iowa) 8-2 in the first game of the day and the Thunder wrapped up the day with a 4-1 victory against Cornell College (Iowa).

Wheaton is now 4-2 on the year following today's wins. The Thunder returns to action on Thursday with games against RPI and Wesleyan (Conn.).

In Wednesday's win against Cornell, the Thunder tallied eight runs, on 13 hits, with three errors and the Rams scored two runs, on seven hits, with one error. Sophomore Katie Thornton earned the victory in seven innings of work. She scattered seven hits, allowing two runs, with no earned runs. Thornton struck out six and walked five.

Christina Sandstedt (PICTURED LEFT) was 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. She also scored four runs scored and drove in another. Stacey Cladis was 3-for-4 at the plate, with two RBI and a run score. Cladis belted a double for the Thunder. Alyssa Leonard was 2-for-3, with a pair of runs and Thornton helped her own cause going 2-for-4, with a double and four RBI.

Cladis tallied a RBI-single in the bottom of the first inning to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Cornell responded with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Wheaton took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Thornton. The Rams added a run in the top of the fifth to tie the contest at 2-2.

Thornton belted a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning as Wheaton's lead increased to 4-2. Wheaton extended its lead to 8-2 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the final score.

The Thunder scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn Wednesday's 4-1 victory against College of St. Scholastica. Wheaton plated four runs, on 11 hits, with four errors and St. Scholastica plated one run, on nine hits, with no errors. Abby Butler picked up the win in six innings of work. Butler scattered seven hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. She allowed one unearned run in the victory. Marisa Voss earned the save in one inning of scoreless relief. She scattered two hits.

Sophomore Katie Yergler was 2-for-3, with a double, a walk and a run scored. Becky Leone had a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with two doubles and Cladis was 2-for-4. Jessica Goeke recorded a 2-for-4 effort, with two runs scored.


Cladis gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead with a RBI-single in the top of the first inning. St. Scholastica plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Sandstedt hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to highlight a three-run inning for the Thunder.
