Clermont, Fla. - The Wheaton Thunder softball team split a pair of games for the second consecutive day in the second day of action for the Thunder on its Spring Break trip to Florida. Wheaton dropped a 2-1 decision to Haverford College and the Thunder topped Mount Ida College 9-4 later in the evening.
Wheaton is now 2-2 on the year and will play two more games on Wednesday. The Thunder will face Cornell College (Iowa) at 1 p.m. (EDT) and take on College of St. Scholastica at 3 p.m.
Haverford plated a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to account for its 2-1 victory over the Thunder. Haverford scored two runs, on three hits, with no errors and Wheaton tallied one run, with nine hits and two errors. Sophomore
Katie Thornton (0-2) took the loss in six innings of work. She scattered three hits, with two strikeouts and four walks. Thornton allowed two runs, including one earned run.

Katie Yergler was 3-for-4 at the plate.
Jessica Goeke was 2-for-3, with a stolen base and
Christina Sandstedt was 2-for-3 with Wheaton's lone run in the game.
The Thunder wrapped up the night with a 9-4 victory against Mount Ida. Wheaton plated nine runs, on 10 hits, with five errors and Mount Ida scored four runs, on 11 hits, with two errors. Freshman Marissa Voss earned the win in four innings of work as she allowed three runs, including two earned runs, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Abby Butler recorded the save in three innings as she allowed one unearned run, with one hit, one strikeout and one walk.
Yergler continued her strong play, going 3-for-3, with two runs and two RBI. She stole four bases in the game. Voss helped her own cause, going 2-for-2. Sandstedt was 2-for-3 in the win, with three RBI and a run scored.
Stacey Cladis put together a 2-for-4 effort, with two runs scored and
Alyssa Leonard belted a triple.
The Thunder took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a RBI-single by Yergler. Wheaton added two more runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a RBI-triple for Leonard as the Thunder lead increased to 3-0. The Thunder lead improved to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Sandstedt hit a two-run single to centerfield and Yergler drove in another run with a single.
Mount Ida plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut Wheaton's advantage to 6-4. Wheaton added three insurance runs, highlighted by a RBI single from Sandstedt, in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the 9-4 final score.
