Thunder softball team opens 2014 with a split

GAME STATS 1 | GAME STATS 2 Clermont, Fla. - The Wheaton Thunder softball team opened its 2014 season on Monday with a pair of games to start its 10-game trip to Florida. College of St. Scholastica defeated the Thunder 2-1 in eight innings in Monday's opener and Wheaton rallied to earn a 10-9 victory against Lakeland College in the day's second game. Wheaton (1-1) will take on Mount Ida at 5 p.m. (EST) and Haverford College at 7 p.m. in Tuesday's games.

St. Scholastica earned the 2-1 victory against the Thunder with two runs, on three hits, with one error and Wheaton plated one run, on five hits, with one error. Sophomore pitcher Katie Thornton worked 7-1/3 innings, allowing two runs, including one earned run. Thornton held the Saints to just three hits, with five strikeouts and eight walks. Jessica Goeke was 2-of-3 at the plate, with a walk and a run scored. Alyssa Leonard drove in Wheaton's lone run in the game.

St. Scholastica took a 1-0 lead, scoring the first run of the game int he bottom of the second inning. The Thunder tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Goeke led off the top of the sixth inning with an infield single and scored on the next at bat thanks to a triple by Leonard.

Wheaton scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the 10-9 victory against Lakeland College. Wheaton tallied 10 runs, on 11 hits, with six errors and Lakeland scored nine runs, on 14 hits, with three errors. Christina Sandstedt led the Thunder with three hits and she drove in a pair of runs in the victory.
