Wheaton, Ill.- The Thunder women's basketball team stepped out of conference play on Wednesday night and secured a one-sided 90-32 victory over the Illinois Institute of Technology. All 12 Thunder players who played on Wednesday night tallied points and rebounds as Wheaton held its opponents to just nine field goals in the game. Wheaton (19-5) will host Illinois Wesleyan University at 5 PM on Saturday night.
For the second consecutive game, Wheaton held its opponent to just 18.8% (9-48) shooting from the field and just 1-8 from the three-point line. The Scarlet Hawks were 13-23 (56.5%) from the free throw line. Wheaton shot 48.1% (39-81) from the field and 7-20 (35%) from the free throw line but was just 5-13 (38.5%) from the free throw line. Wheaton won the battle on the glass with a 55-35 advantage including a 25-12 edge in offensive rebounds.
Wheaton jumped out to an early lead by scoring the game's first 13 points and followed that with a 14-0 run in the middle of the half to take a 32-8 edge. The Thunder would led 43-16 at the halftime break. Wheaton owned a 14-0 edge in fast break points and a 20-0 edge in bench points in the first stanza.
The Thunder opened the second half on a 12-0 run to build the lead to 39 points and closed the game by scoring the final ten points to push the final score to 90-32.
Katie McDaniels led all scorers with 21 points to to with three rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.
Ellie Zeller scored 14 points,
Hannah Considine finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
Lauren Graham led Wheaton with 11 rebounds.
Wheaton will cap its regular season schedule on Saturday night at 5 PM when the Thunder host Illinois Wesleyan University. Prior to the game, Wheaton will honor
Maris Hovee and
Maria Panaggio as part of its Senior Night festivities.
Note Worthy: With her 21 points,
Katie McDaniels moved past Jill Trenz into third place on the freshman scoring list. Trenz scored 367 points in 2004-05. McDaniels still trails Sunnie Kemp (429, 1982-83) and Stephanie Clark (471, 1993-94).
