Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton Thunder wrestling team defeated Concordia (Wis.) 23-18 in a dual match on Friday inside Wheaton's King Arena.
Wheaton freshman
Carlos Fuentez won the first match of evening as he dominated Concordia's Max Reiderer to win a 21-3 technical fall in the final minute of the match. The following match went to the Falcons' Sean Ambrocio, a nationally-ranked wrestler at 133-pounds, who earned a pin.
The Falcons picked up a forfeit at 141-pounds and Wheaton freshman
Campbell Morton (PICTURED LEFT) won an 8-4 decision at 149-pounds against Quinton Lueck. Thunder All-American
Mark Savenok earned a hard-fought 10-9 decision at 157-pounds against Pierce Holtfreter.
Wheaton All-American
Stephen Aiello won via a forfeit at 165-pounds to help the Thunder regain the lead in the team scoring. Concordia's Mason Mergener defeated
Frank Aiello in an 8-4 decision at 174-pounds.
Dan Olsen extended Wheaton's lead in the team scoring to 20-15 with a 3-1 decision against Mason Baumgartner at 184-pounds.
Jake Reutler of the Falcons won an 11-5 decision against Wheaton's
Jared Fekete at 197-pounds to trim the Wheaton lead to 20-18. Reutler's win setup a situation in the final match at 285-pounds that would give the winning team of the match a team victory as well.
Wheaton's
Logan Walkup and Concordia's Paul Carter were tied 0-0 at the end of the first period and Carter owned a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of the second period. Carter gained a takedown and a near fall early in the third period to gain a 7-1 lead against Walkup who showed determination to rally with an escape, a takedown and back points to trim his deficit. Carter gained an escape, but a takedown by Walkup setup an 8-8 tie to send the match into overtime. In the first 20-seconds of the overtime period a quick attack by Walkup gave the sophomore a 10-8 decision just 20-seconds into the extra time and allowed Wheaton to earn the 23-18 win.
