#7-Wheaton women's soccer team shuts out Elmhurst 5-0 in the CCIW opener

Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's soccer team opened its 2014 CCIW schedule with a 5-0 victory against Elmhurst (6-4-0/0-1-0) at home on Friday night. Wheaton, ranked seventh in this week's NSCAA Division III Top-25, is now 9-1-1 on the year and 1-0-0 in CCIW play.
 
Wheaton took an early 1-0 lead in the match when Ally Witt registered her seventh goal of the year in the 11th minute. Witt's go-ahead goal was assisted by sophomore Sarah Frey. Each team took nine shots in the first half as Wheaton held a 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
 
Wheaton took a 2-0 lead a little more than five minutes into the second half as Kristin Rauh scored with a goal in the right corner. Rauh's goal in the 51st minute was assisted by senior Anna Seabolt. The Thunder took a 3-0 lead 1:04 later when Sydney Sharkey blasted in her third goal of the year in the 53rd minute. Wheaton's attack continued to produce results when Rauh's second goal of the night reached the back of the net off of an Anna Seabolt assist in the 63rd minute. The 5-0 final outcome was the result of an Anna Burnidge goal in the 83rd minute. Wheaton dominated play in the second half as the Thunder out-shot the guests 14-3 in the second half.
 
Wheaton owned a 23-12 advantage in shots in the match and the hosts were awarded five corner kicks, while Elmhurst had one.  Wheaton goalkeeper Kelsey Graham made six saves in the 76 minutes of work in the net, while Abbey Fuster made one stop in 14 minutes of action. Elmhurst's Melinda Vickers made four saves and allowed one goal as she played 45 minutes in the Bluejays' net. Emily Gordon played the second half for the guests as she made four saves and allowed four goals.  
 
The Thunder will begin a string of four consecutive road games on October 8 at UW-Oshkosh.
