Kenosha, Wis. – The fifth-ranked Wheaton men's soccer team dropped its first CCIW match of the season in a 2-1 loss at Carthage (8-6-0/2-1-0 CCIW) on Wednesday night. Tonight's loss snapped Wheaton's 10-match win streak.
Wheaton is now 12-3-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in conference play. The Thunder will return to action on Saturday in a conference match at Illinois Wesleyan.
Carthage capitalized early when Arnoldo Reyes scored a goal the 14th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Reyes' goal was the result of a double-assist from Taylor Pignataro and Ryan Crane. Carthage out-shot the Thunder 6-3 in the first half as the Red Men maintained the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Carthage's Austin Bitta increased the hosts' lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 78th minute.
Marshall Hollingsworth scored for the Thunder in the 79th minute to cut Carthage's lead 2-1 on a goal that was assisted by
Jonathan Clark. Wheaton continued to attack in the closing minutes as the Thunder had three shot attempts in the final seven minutes, including two shots by
Max Carey. Carthage held on for the victory.
Each team attempted 14 shots in the match and each squad had four corner kicks on the evening. Wheaton goalkeeper
Matt Paprocki made eight saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of work. Carthage netminder Jovani Mata tallied nine saves with one goal allowed.
