Minneapolis, Minn.- After dropping its previous two matches, the #13-ranked Wheaton men's soccer team returned to its winning ways with a 1-0 victory at #23-ranked Augsburg College.
Noah Anthony scored the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Wheaton (3-2) will continue its weekend trip on Saturday with a 4 PM game at Bethel University.
Making his first appearance for the Thunder, junior transfer
Matt Paprocki earned a clean sheet in goal while making three saves in 90 minutes of action. Lynch Clayton allowed just one goal while making four saves for the Auggies, who fell to 3-1-1 with the loss.
Wheaton controlled the pace of play throughout a very competitive first half and outshot Augsburg 7-3 in the first 45 minutes. Neither team could connect with their chances and the first half ended scoreless.
After being awarded a free kick at the top of the attacking third, the Thunder build their attack starting with an overlapping run from
Adam Blackman (PICTURED RIGHT). Anthony used the free kick to send Blackman into the box from the left side of the goal. Blackman tried to weave his way through a trio of Auggie defenders but was taken down as he worked towards the end line and Wheaton was awarded a penalty kick. Ben Henry of Augsburg was cautioned on the takedown. Anthony then slotted the kick in the lower right corner to put Wheaton up 1-0.
The Thunder defense held in front of Paprocki as Augsburg attempted to even the score, but Wheaton would instead complete its second shutout of the season.
