Thunder softball sweeps a doubleheader with Trinity Christian

The Thunder softball team swept a doubleheader with Trinity Christian College on Monday afternoon at Ruth Leedy Field. Wheaton earned a 12-4 win in the first game and the Thunder won the nightcap 8-4. Wheaton (12-7) will return to conference action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Carthage.

The Thunder earned a 12-4 win in the first game as Wheaton scored 12 runs, on 13 hits, with one error and Trinity Christian scored four runs, on three hits, with two errors. Danielle Schmidt (7-3) earned the win in seven innings. The senior allowed four runs, including three earned runs, on three hits, with four strikeouts and three walks allowed.

Freshman Alyssa Leonard (PICTURED LEFT) went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice. Christina Sandstedt was 3-for-4, with a double as she drove in three runs and scored twice. #Schmidt helped her own cause going 2-for-3, with two runs scored and two RBI. Suzanne Teuben was 2-for-4, with three RBI.

Trinity Christian scored one run in the top of the first inning to go ahead 1-0. The Thunder scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning as Schmidt, Sandstedt and Teuben each hit RBI-singles in the inning. The Trolls scored twice in the top of the third inning and added one more run in the fourth inning to cut Wheaton's lead to 5-4. Sandstedt (PICTURED RIGHT) belted a RBI-double in the fourth inning and Teuben added a RBI in the inning as Wheaton increased its lead to 7-4.  The Thunder ended the game with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Schmidt, Becky Leone, Jessica Goeke, Sandstedt and Teuben each hit a RBI-single in the inning. 

Wheaton won today's finale 8-4 as the Thunder scored eight runs, on 13 hits, with one error and Trinity Christian scored four runs on 10 hits, with three errors. Starting pitcher Katie Thornton (4-3) earned the win in five innings. She allowed four runs, on eight hits, with three strikeouts and four walks. Schmidt picked up the save in two innings of scoreless relief, scattering two hits.

Freshman centerfielder Katie Yergler was 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Goeke was 2-for-3, with two runs and two RBI. Thornton was 2-for-3 with two runs driven in. Leonard was 2-for-3 with a RBI. 

Wheaton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run single by Thornton. The Trolls scored a run in the top of the second inning and Wheaton responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase Wheaton's lead to 7-1. Goeke and Leonard each hit RBI-singles and Sandstedt also drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Trinity Christian scored twice in the top of the third inning and once more in the top of the fifth inning to trim Wheaton's lead to 7-4. Sandstedt drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a RBI-single to account for Wheaton's 8-4 victory.
