Thunder softball team falls to Robert Morris and Calvin

The Thunder softball took a pair of losses on Saturday at the Wheaton Properties Wheaton Invitational. Robert Morris defeated the Thunder 6-5 in eight innings in the first game and Calvin College defeated the Thunder 8-4 in the final game. Robert Morris defeated Calvin 2-0 in the day's second game to give RMU the tournament title. Wheaton (10-7) will host Trinity Christian College on Monday for a 3 PM doubleheader at Ruth Leedy Field.

Robert Morris defeated Wheaton 6-5 in the day's first game. The Eagles scored six runs, on 10 hits, with one error and Wheaton plated five runs, on eight hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher Katie Thornton (3-3) took the lost in 7-1/3 innings. She allowed six runs, including four earned runs, on 10 hits, with seven strikeouts and five walks. Stacey Cladis was 2-for-4 with a double. Freshman Lyndsey Pritchard had a 2-for-4 effort with a double, a run scored and a RBI. Freshmen Alyssa Leonard (PICTURED LEFT) and Katie Thornton each hit a home run for the hosts.

Wheaton took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run by Leonard. The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 2-2. Robert Morris added three runs in the bottom of the second to increase its lead to 5-2. Wheaton tied the game at 5-5 with three runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a RBI-double by Pritchard and a two-run home run to centerfield by Thornton that tied the contest at 5-5. Neither team scored in the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings and the Eagles won the game with a RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the 6-5 victory.

Calvin defeated Wheaton 8-4 in the final game as the Knights scored eight runs, on nine hits, with no errors and Wheaton scored four runs, on 14 hits, with three errors. Thunder starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (6-3) took the loss in seven innings of pitching. Schmidt allowed eight runs, on nine hits, with 11 strikeouts and six walks. Christina Sandstedt (PICTURED RIGHT) was 3-for-3, with a RBI and a triple. Cladis went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double and a run scored. Pritchard was 2-for-4 with a run and Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Jessica Goeke was 2-for-5 in the contest.

Calvin scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added two more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead on the Thunder. Wheaton plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Yergler hit a RBI-double into left centerfield, with Schmidt and Sandstedt each adding a RBI-single.  Each team scored a run in the fifth inning with Cladis scoring for the Thunder after she reached base on a one-out double. Calvin scored two runs in the sixth inning and added one more run in the seventh to account for the 8-4 final score.
