Chicago, Ill. – The Wheaton softball team split a pair of games in its conference opening doubleheader at North Park University on Wednesday afternoon. North Park rallied to win the opener 2-1 and Wheaton was a 3-2 winner in the nightcap. The Thunder (9-5/1-1 CCIW) will host Concordia University-Chicago in a rescheduled game on Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM at Ruth Leedy Field. The Thunder will host the Wheaton Properties Wheaton Invitational on Saturday when the Thunder hosts Robert Morris on Saturday at 10 AM and the hosts will take on Calvin College at 3 PM.
The Vikings won game one with two runs, on seven hits, with one errors and Wheaton scored one run, on six hits, with two errors. Wheaton starting pitcher
Danielle Schmidt (5-2) took the loss in 6-1/3 innings, with two runs, including one earned run, on seven hits, with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI-single by Teuben. The Vikings tied the Vikings scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the contest at 1-1. North Park tallied the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the victory.
Wheaton won the nightcap with three runs, on seven hits, and no errors, while the Vikings scored two runs, on 10 hits, with one error. Freshman starting pitcher
Katie Thornton (3-2) earned the win in seven innings. She allowed two runs, on 10 hits, with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Jessica Goeke (PICTURED RIGHT) was 2-for-2, with a run scored and a stolen base.
Katie Yergler was 2-for-3 with a run driven in for the Thunder.
Wheaton took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Teuben drove in a run in the first inning with a RBI-double and
Stacey Cladis added a RBI-single down the right field line. The Thunder extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by Goeke. The Vikings chipped away at the Wheaton lead with a run in the top of the third inning and the Vikings trimmed the Wheaton lead to 3-2 with another run in the top of the fifth inning. However, Thornton shut the door on any North Park rally to give Wheaton its first CCIW win of the year.
