Thunder softball team drops a pair in the season finale

The Wheaton Thunder softball team concluded its season on Saturday afternoon in a CCIW doubleheader at #18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. The Titans topped the Thunder 5-1 in the first game and IWU (28-7/9-3) won the second game 3-0. Wheaton ends its year with a 17-16 overall record and a 5-9 mark in CCIW play.

Illinois Wesleyan won today's opener with five runs, on nine hits, with no errors and Wheaton scored one run, on four hits, with no errors. Thunder starting pitcher Danielle Schmidt (11-7) took the loss in six innings as she allowed five runs, on nine hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. Christina Sandstedt was 3-for-3 at the plate.

The Titans scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Wheaton scored a run in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a RBI groundout by Katie Yergler. The Titans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to account for the 5-1 final score.

Illinois Wesleyan won today's second game 3-0 as the Titans plated three runs, on seven hits, with no errors and Wheaton had no runs, on two hits, with two errors. Lyndsey Pritchard (1-2) took the loss in three innings, with two runs, on four hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Danielle Schmidt tossed four innings, allowing one run, on three hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

Singles by Stacey Cladis and Christina Sandstedt each hit singles to account for Wheaton's two hits in the game. The Titans scored two runs in the top of the third inning and added another run in the sixth as the hosts won the 3-0 decision.

Today's twinbill marked the final games in the careers of Wheaton seniors Suzanne Teuben and Danielle Schmidt. Teuben hit for a .309 batting average (112-362) in her career, with 52 RBI and 42 runs in her four seasons with the Thunder. Schmidt leaves the Wheaton softball program as one of the top pitchers in program history. She compiled a career record of 42-30, with a 2.89 career ERA in 504-1/3 innings pitched. Schmidt's 463 career strikeouts is the most in school history. She is second in school history in wins (42), third all-time in innings pitched (504-1/3 IP) and fourth in appearances (88).
